Execeptional Comic and TV Host Jan Murray
has passed away at age 89. He was one of the few comics who rose from doing gigs in the Catskills to big time TV. He also hosted the 1950’s game show “Treasure Hunt”. According to his son Howard, Mr. Murray passed away in his Beverly Hills Home. There were both Daytime and Primetime versions of “Treasure Hunt” which ran from 1956-1959. The show first appeared on ABC and then later on NBC.
Mr. Murrays real name is Murray Janofsky and he was born on Oct. 4th 1916. He honed his comedic talents by watching vaudeville and then performing at various differnet Catskill locations not unlike the late Buddy Hackett or for that matter Mel Brooks along with Sid Ceasar and Red Buttons.
Mr Murray later moved to Los Angeles to pursue a career in acting. Among the movies that he appeared in were “The Busy Body”, “Who Killed Teddy Bear” and had a small roll in Mel Brook’s “The History of the World Part One”. He also did many guest host shots on the Tonight Show and did many guest shots in 1960’s and 70’s TV shows some of them being “The Name Game”, “Love American Style” and “The Man from Uncle”.
This man was a great talent on the small screen and according to his son he balanced his work with a very rich family life. Mr. Murray will be sorely missed as you cannot find talent like his very easily. Other performers may come and go but Mr Murray’s talent will always stand the test of time in my opinion. He certainly was one of a kind. Mr. Murray is survived by his sons Howard and Warren, his wife Toni and daughters Diane and Celia, eight grand children, and 2 great-grandchildren.
